Guru Purnima: Awakening the Guru Within

Guru Purnima is observed on the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashadha. In 2026, it falls on Wednesday, 29 July. It is also known as Vyasa Purnima, honouring the sage Veda Vyasa and the sacred tradition of transmitting spiritual knowledge from teacher to student.

Every year, Guru Purnima invites us to pause and honour the wisdom that has guided our journey. Traditionally, it is a day of gratitude for our spiritual teachers, mentors, parents and all those who have helped illuminate our path. The word guru is often understood as one who leads us from darkness into light—from ignorance into knowledge and awareness.

But this Guru Purnima, I invite you to explore another sacred truth:

What if the guru you have been searching for - also lives within you?

I AM my OWN Guru

Being your own guru does not mean that you no longer need teachers, mentors or spiritual guidance. It means that you stop abandoning your own inner knowing.

A true teacher does not ask you to become dependent upon them. A true teacher helps you remember the wisdom already living within your soul. They offer knowledge, perspective and direction, but ultimately, you must listen, discern and choose your own path.

There is a quiet voice within you that knows when something feels right. It knows when you need to speak, when you need to remain silent, when you need to rest and when you need to take the next courageous step.

The difficulty is not that this voice does not exist. The difficulty is that we have become accustomed to doubting it.

We ask everyone else what we should do. We search for signs outside ourselves. We wait for someone to give us permission. We confuse fear with intuition, attachment with divine guidance and urgency with spiritual direction.

Guru Purnima reminds us to return to the inner teacher. The more you honour this voice, the clearer it becomes.

Creating a Sacred Connection with Yourself

1. Create Daily Silence

Give yourself at least five minutes each day without music, conversation, scrolling or distraction.

Place your hand over your heart and ask: What do I need to know today?

Not necessary that you must receive an answer. Many times, it can be received as an energetic download.

2. Keep an Inner-Guru Journal

Write down your intuitive feelings before asking others for advice. You may use prompts such as:

  • If I trusted myself completely, I would…
  • What do I know….
  • If I knew the ending it would be …
  • My heart is asking me to…
  • Wisdom is telling me…

Over time, this practice will help you recognise the difference between fear, impulse, attachment and genuine inner guidance.

3. Honour Your Body’s Wisdom

Your body often responds before your mind understands. Notice when your body contracts, becomes heavy or feels restless. Also notice when you experience relief, openness, calmness or a sense of inner expansion.

Not every uncomfortable feeling is a warning, and not every exciting feeling is divine guidance. However, your body can provide valuable information when you learn to observe it without immediately reacting.

Do keep a journal on how you and your body interact and how it communicates with you.

4. Ask yourself the answer FIRST

Before seeking external guidance, sit with the question yourself. Ask for advice when it is helpful, but do not surrender your authority. You can respect someone’s wisdom without allowing them to make every decision for you.

5. Create a Sacred Space at Home

Create a small sacred space in your home. It does not need to be elaborate.

You may include a candle, flowers, prayer beads, crystals, or anything that helps you return to stillness.

Let this space remind you that divine connection does not exist only in temples or distant places.

The sacred can meet you where you are.

On this Guru Purnima, I choose to work on:

Trusting my first inner knowing.
I will notice what I feel before allowing outside opinions to influence me.

Separating intuition from fear.
I will give myself time before making decisions.

Listening without judging myself.
I will allow my emotions to communicate without labelling them.

Becoming consistent in my spiritual practice.
I will stop waiting for the perfect mood, time or environment to connect with the Divine.

Receiving guidance without surrendering my power.
I can learn from others while remaining responsible for my own choices.

Living the wisdom I have already received.
I will practise what I know instead of continually searching for another answer.
