Building a Home for Your Soul
I remember my first Ganpati Chaturthi after I got married.
I was 23 when I married, and at 24, I experienced my first Ganpati celebration as part of my new family. The father of my children was a devotee of Ganpati, and I remember being fascinated by the preparation that went into welcoming Lord Ganesha home.
It wasn’t simply a matter of bringing home a murti and finding somewhere to place it.
A home was created for Him.
There would be planning and discussion. Materials would be gathered. Colors and decorations would be chosen. And then everyone would work late into the night, sometimes through the entire night, creating the space where Ganpati would sit.
Every detail mattered.
There was excitement, but there was also devotion.
We were building a home for God.
And when I think about those nights now, many years later, they carry a completely different lesson for me.
If we can put so much heart and soul into building a home for God, how much heart and soul do we put into building a home for our own soul?
Where Does Your Soul Live?
Your soul lives within you.
Not only within your physical body, but within the inner world you create every day.
Your thoughts are part of its home.
Your emotions are part of its home.
Your relationships, boundaries, habits, beliefs, choices and the way you speak to yourself all become part of the environment in which your soul must live.
So, ask yourself:
What kind of home have I created within myself?
Is it peaceful?
Is it loving?
Is there room to breathe?
Or has it become crowded with old pain, expectations, resentment, fear, guilt and the voices of everyone I have tried to please?
We clean our houses.
We repair what is broken.
We remove things we no longer need.
We decorate spaces so that they feel beautiful.
But sometimes we live for years without doing the same thing for our soul.
Preparing the Inner Temple
There is something beautiful about preparing a sacred space.
Before Ganpati arrived, the space was prepared for His presence.
Perhaps our spiritual work is not so different.
We don’t have to search endlessly for the Divine.
Perhaps we have to prepare ourselves to receive it.
That preparation may mean clearing an old belief.
Forgiving something we have carried for too long.
Creating a boundary.
Leaving behind an identity that no longer belongs to us.
Learning to sit quietly with ourselves.
Choosing compassion instead of criticism.
Choosing truth instead of performance.
Choosing peace instead of constantly proving our worth.
Brick by brick, choice by choice, we build an inner home.
And eventually we realize something extraordinary:
We were never only building a home for our soul.
We were building a home for the Divine within us.
You cannot always control what happens outside your home.
But you can become conscious of what you allow to live inside it.
Your inner home does not have to be perfect.
It simply needs to become yours again.
Your Soul Deserves a Beautiful Place to Live
Perhaps today you don’t need to become anything more.
Perhaps you need to clear away everything that has accumulated around who you already are.
Open the windows.
Let some old stories leave.
Sweep out the guilt.
Move the furniture of your beliefs around.
Take down the expectations that were never yours.
Create space for silence.
Create space for joy.
Create space for the person you are becoming.
And then sit there for a moment.
Because underneath all the noise, striving and becoming, there is a presence that has been waiting patiently for you to come home.
Your soul.
Meditation — Building the Home Within
Close your eyes.
Take a slow breath in.
And gently breathe out.
Again, breathe in…
and release.
Imagine yourself standing before a beautiful home.
Don’t decide what it should look like.
Allow it to reveal itself to you.
This is the home of your soul.
Walk slowly towards it.
Notice the doorway.
And when you are ready, step inside.
Look around.
Perhaps some rooms are beautiful and filled with light.
Perhaps other rooms have been closed for a very long time.
There is nothing you need to judge.
You are simply here to see.
Now imagine a soft golden light entering the home.
Let it move slowly through every room.
Through every memory.
Every fear.
Every disappointment.
Every version of yourself you thought you had to become.
You don’t need to fight any of them.
Simply allow the light to move through.
And as it does, silently say:
I release what no longer needs to live here.
Breathe.
Watch the windows opening.
Fresh air enters.
Light enters.
Space appears.
Now imagine yourself placing something beautiful in the center of this home — perhaps a flame, a flower, a crystal, a symbol, or simply a sphere of light.
This represents you.
Your true essence.
Your soul.
Sit beside it.
Feel its presence.
You have spent so much of your life searching, building, achieving, caring, fixing and becoming.
For these few moments, there is nowhere else you need to go.
Place your hand over your heart and say:
My soul is welcome here.
Love is welcome here.
Peace is welcome here.
The Divine is welcome here.
I am home.
Take three slow breaths.
And when you are ready, gently open your eyes.
B&C Clearing — Clearing the Inner Home
Clear what I am still carrying that my soul no longer needs.
Clear beliefs, memories, relationships, fears, expectations, resentments that occupy the space of my soul
Clear all the version of myself that I have outgrown.
Clear blocks to having full soul presence and essence
Clear every place where I have abandoned myself.
Clear blocks to fill the spaces I have cleared with love, peace and truth.
